Downtown@808 Church in Goshen, IN. (www.downtown808.org) will be sending a team of 9 people to work with Safe Harbor Intl. in the Sudan in March of 2009. Safe Harbor is a medical mission that offers not only medical help to those who need it, but also purchases wells to provide safe and sanitary drinking water to local Sudanese communities. People from the Downtown@808 team will be completing construction projects and providing practical assistance to the clinic professionals. This will be the second team that Downtown@808 has sent, and a little over 3 years ago Downtown @808 was able to raise $10,000 to build one of 10 fresh water wells. Downtown@808 feels blessed to be apart of God’s work in the Sudan, and is committed to be a blessing to the clinic and the Sudanese communities it serves for the long term.
To raise money for this effort, Downtown@808 Church will be holding a fundraising event called "Soup & Sweets for Sudan" at the Old Goshen Theater (www.goshentheater.com) on Friday night January 2, 2009 from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm. There will be free live entertainment, while soup, deserts & beverages will be sold, on a suggested donation basis, throughout the event to raise funds. Non- food related donations will also be accepted, and are tax-deductible. Receipts will be given upon request.
Because the "Soup & Sweets for Sudan" benefit will be held on the first Friday of the month, the city of Goshen will also be holding its monthly "First Friday" event. There will be multiple entertainment venues, the streets will be full of ice-sculptors (40), a "chili-fire" competition (local restaurants competing for the best "Hot" chili), and all of Goshen's downtown businesses will be open late for business. The team is hoping to raise around $20,000 before March; $12,000 to help cover the cost of the chartered flight from Kenya into the Sudan, and $8,000 to give as financial support to the mission.
